LETTER TO THE EDITOR
Dear Sir,
While we all deplore the shenanigans at Westminster, people have urged me to write to you about the absurdity of making UKIP the beneficiary in the European elections on 4 June.
As you have reported, Tom Wise MEP, one of the region’s two MEPs elected for UKIP in 2004, awaits trial for false accounting and money laundering. It took Nigel Farage, UKIP’s leader, two years to sack Mr Wise from the first allegations being made. The other UKIP MEP has been all but invisible and inactive both in the Parliament and in the constituency.
When it comes to probity, in June 2005 all UKIP MEPs voted against reforming the European Parliament’s own system of pay, tax, pensions and expenses. Fortunately, they were defeated.
Voters are angry with many politicians, and the reasons are clear and justified. But voting for UKIP, a reactionary party that is more like an old boys’ club, soaking up tax payers’ cash, taking life easy and selling Britain’s interests down the river is not the answer.
By contrast, Liberal Democrats are at the heart of Europe fighting for common action that will boost the economy, fight crime and save the environment. We know that Britain benefits from its EU membership: that we are stronger together and poorer apart. That is our message in this European election campaign.
Yours faithfully,
Andrew Duff MEP
